Root A stroll through the might and right

While on the road, a lot of times. The boys and I will pass the time with some board games. Every blue moon we get into ones that have complications and the need of time to figure out. The basis of today’s game is one of those types generally, if you were to play its physical board game version. I will say, it has been on my radar. Thanks to the popularity of a DnD group, Legends of Avantris – YouTube who has a playthrough based on the series. Initially, I was unaware that it was a board game let alone a pc game. It had just shown up in my discovery on Steam. This game has been out since 2020 and has grown with some additional expansions to continue the fun. I’ll just be covering the base game and all that it has to offer.

From the start, I feel like this game does justice in keeping up with the original design for characters and environment. It’s astounding how it’s built from a simple board game. The presented world is beautiful. From the start you are walked through the tutorial. Regardless of how much information you’re able to absorb, don’t fret. You’ll always have the chance to revisit and have some moments where your hand is held enough to get you by. You’ll discover the basics and then have the chance to have assistance through each faction. At the start without the additional expansions, you’ll have your choice of 4 factions to choose from. As mentioned with tutorials, each faction also has one to help you on your journey.

Gameplay wise, I feel like this game best compares in my eyes to the Fire Emblem series. It’s not a carbon copy, it offers a great difference in the sense that your actions are defined by the dice. And you don’t exactly have troops that dwindle per action in the same way. It’s still a very nostalgic excitement when you have combat moments. I won’t detail every point of the factions. This is a very detailed game that provides more than just the base game to enjoy. They offer a massive list of challenges to tackle. Which has been a lot of fun to endure through.

The only real issue that I’ve had, and it seems like many others have. That would drop my overall rating down to a 3-star frog splash, is the multiplayer. This game has been out for 4 years, and it doesn’t seem like there is much chance that they’ll make any changes or improvements to one of its most promising functions. I had some issues, which stopped me from pursuing it any further. It has other gameplay options, singleplayer with ai, and then what seems like a couch co-op option. Neither are as appealing if you get tired of one and lack the other.

Root digital board game release trailer
Overall, regardless of my base opinion. I think highly of this game and its series overall. I give credit once more to Legends of Avantris for that though. They bring it alive and make you want to experience it. I think the Root – Dire Wolf Digital with friends would probably be a fantastic game night. And this covers that in some corners of it, and it’s very depressing that it didn’t manage to come out strongest with the multiplayer. I hope that it’ll one day reach a point where people will be able to enjoy it without disconnection issues. Find it on Steam, Nintendo, and both Apple and Android.
