I’ve been eyeing Toads of the Bayou since I learned about it during NextFest 2024, and finally took some time to give the demo a go. It’s a fairly short demo, but it let you get a feel for a large aspect of the game I feel.
You start off with a choice of one of the available toads, “The Leader”, which each has their own perks that they do depending on the cards and such that you play. The Leader lets you gain a Barricade every 2 enemies that you kill in a turn, Draw 1 when a Barricade is destroyed, and Shooting Adjacent enemies applies 1 stun. All of that doesn’t mean much to you right away, but as soon as you start to learn how the game plays, his skills are very very strong in my opinion.

The gameplay of Toads of the Bayou is all about destroying the enemies, while usually protecting some other objective from being destroyed. Each card I find has some kind of unique synergy with other cards, or other tactics. Like the stab cards for instance have a pushback to them, so if you were to knock the enemy off the edge, or into a barricade or another enemy, they take/do additional damage to whatever they hit.

Objectives are fairly straightforward in Toads of Bayou. At least in the demo anyways. Each level was like “protect the oil” for some additional points, and “destroy 8 enemies” for some points as well. Which never was really a struggle each level. Infact I don’t think I really took damage once until like the last 2 levels of the demo.
In-between each level you can use the oil you earned as a currency to buy new things. This could be consumables to help you out during the battle. Or a new toad to add to your party that adds even more synergy. Theres even new cards to add to your deck. All have a varying price so unless I was buying traps and such, I really could only afford like one new thing between turns like a card or a new toad.

All in all I’m definitely excited to pick up Toads of the Bayou. I don’t have any complaints for the game. I just want to experience more of what different characters and different synergies there are. Easily 9.5/10. Super solid gameplay loop.
